The Division of Arts & Humanities, at UC San Diego, is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

UC San Diego is inviting applications for a full-time position as Embedded Mentor Coordinator and Lecturer of the Analytical Writing Program. The Embedded Mentor Coordinator reports to the Director of Analytical Writing and will work closely with the Analytical Writing faculty and administrative team. The appointment may be annual or biennial, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding availability.

Under the general guidance of the Director and Associate Director of Analytical Writing, the incumbent is expected to: hire, train, supervise, and assess the undergraduate mentors who serve the AWP 2A Analytical Writing courses; support our diverse population of students; assist the Director and Associate Director in composing surveys and collecting data for program assessment; and promote a program culture that encourages inclusiveness and rigor in the teaching and learning of writing. The Embedded Mentor Coordinator is also expected to be an effective teacher who can enact the program’s principles and practices in his or her basic writing classroom.

Job functions:
• Recruit, interview, and select up to 35 undergraduate mentors per year
• Create faculty assignments, schedule mentors, and oversee payroll
• Develop training materials and organize training sessions throughout the academic year
• Observe mentors and discuss performance in follow-up meetings
• Organize surveys of faculty, mentors, and students periodically through the academic year
• Collect and interpret end-of-term survey results and prepare report for the Director
• Develop workshops and materials for mentees
• Participate in professional development meetings
• Read and score the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE)
• Assist in the assessment of student portfolios
• Assist in the assessment of the curriculum
• Teach in the Analytical Writing Program

Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D or MA in Composition or related field
• University teaching experience in Composition, including experience teaching basic and ELL writers
• Current knowledge of effective, evidence-based practices and emerging trends in teaching and learning in Composition
• Evidence of the ability to support faculty and graduate teaching assistance regarding matters of teaching
• Strong communication skills and service-oriented approach to individuals at all levels and across disciplines
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with administrators, academic units, faculty, graduate students, and staff
• Experience using or supporting the use of academic technologies, such as learning management systems, digital and/or social media
• Experience in program or institutional evaluation
• A commitment to diversity and to ensuring the success of groups historically underrepresented in higher education

Salary commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. This employment opportunity is for a one or two year appointment at UC San Diego.
