Principal Responsibilities
• Evaluate documentation including but not limited to: IEPs, medical reports, psychological reports, 504 reports, and psychiatric/psychological assessment
• Meet and interview students as part of the assessment process
• Determine appropriate ADA accommodations for each qualified student
• Keep confidential documentation on every student registered for ADA accommodations
• Educate students and families as needed about accommodations in high school vs in college, inform about the support services available at CIA
• Identify and follow up accommodations needs (e.g., extended time, audio books, note takers, etc.) Assess and verify disability documentation, identify functional limitations, and put in place reasonable accommodations
• Work with faculty to develop accommodations
• Stay current with: disability services trends/law, best practices
• Stay informed about CIA’s general education requirements, major requirements, prerequisite requirements, transfer requirements, graduation requirements, and campus policies
• Keep ethical and professional standards in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA
• Serve as a member of the CARE Team to determining appropriate resources and interventions for students with exceptional circumstances and/or heightened concerns
• Provide individualized academic advising to students, about the following topics (but not limited to): selecting majors, selecting coursework/scheduling, registration process, transfer credits, course substitution/waiver, and independent study; connect students to campus resources, monitor academic standing
• Refer students to academic support services within the institution
• Provide appropriate workshops to faculty and staff and orientation about disability services
• Collaborate and participate in open house events, orientation, and graduation events as needed

Essential Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • State and federal laws regarding disabilities, particularly the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA)
  • Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
  • Office of Civil Rights regulations
  • Student development theories
  • Academic advising with attention to detail
  • Effective communication, and strong interpersonal skills, mediation skills, problem solving
  • Ability to apply disability evaluative criteria, decision making with unclear and unprecedented situations
  • Respect for and ability to work with students of diverse backgrounds
  • Related experience in a post-secondary or higher education setting preferred
  • Organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks in coordinating room reservations, requests, and delivery of test materials, monitoring of student/testing database

The successful candidate will have a master’s degree in higher education, social work, special education, counseling, or related field.
