Our Story

Founded in 2009 in the Carey Gardens Community Center just a block from the boardwalk, Coney Island Prep is a school of firsts. The first charter school in south Brooklyn, we were also the first to be run out of a public housing development.

Eight years later, those original 5th graders graduated from high school with a 100% college acceptance rate, dramatically outperforming the neighborhood averages.

We are driven by our mission to prepare every scholar to succeed in the college and career of his or her choice.

This means we set extraordinarily high expectations for our scholars and staff. We have longer hours and more days in session than the district’s schools, and preparation for college starts early. Beginning in middle school, there are yearly college trips, and our high school scholars are able to study abroad, attend pre-college programs across the country, and get connected to the latest summer learning opportunities in NYC.

Now residing in three buildings across South Brooklyn, we serve over 1,000 students in grades K-12.
